Form Letters to Legislators
Concerned about school financing?
According to Superintendent Dr. Duncan Klussmann, SBISD’s budget for fiscal year 2008, which ends June 30,, is running $11 million in the red; preliminary projections for FY 2009 forecast a $10 million deficit.  And while the value of taxable property in the district continues to increase, additional revenue raised does not remain in the local district – it goes to the state.  The funding system adopted by the 79th Legislature froze the amount of revenue per student that districts may raise locally: the amount allocated per student remains flat, and is not adjustable.
Costs are rising: fuel, salaries, healthcare and other benefits will all increase next year.  The Robin Hood payment, which does adjust with property taxes, is expected to jump from $12 to $19 million.

Under the present state funding system, SBISD projects its reserve fund will be depleted sometime in 2012.  Unless school funding laws are changed, school districts all over Texas will face drastic cuts in programs and personnel.

Unhappy with the school calendar?  If the compressed school calendar, and lack of breaks, is exhausting your kids, let your state Senator and Representative know.  Ask them to revisit the decision to start school no earlier than the last Monday of August.
TAKE ACTION!
Copy one or both of these form letters to your word processor and personalize them.  Then, either email or send them to our State Senator Dan Patrick and Representative Beverly Woolley (addresses are included in the letters).  Let them know that you want change in the next Legislative session, which begins in January, 2009.
The more voices, the stronger the message.
Encourage everyone you to know access these letters and speak out.
