Homeroom Volunteering


Offering your time to participate or lead activities in your child's classroom is a wonderful way to contribute to the school and get a taste of the Wilchester experience. 

Below is a list of the various ways to get involved and sign up!

Description of Classroom Volunteer Opportunities

Please note, most of these volunteer activities require help from several parents. You may participate in several activities. Please do not hesitate to sign up!
 
This list gives a brief description of the primary parent classroom volunteer activities. More information is available from the various PTA chairmen. There may be additional classroom activities during the year, and notices are usually provided via the Tuesday folder.  There are many other volunteer activities at the school including Auction and Carnival.
 
Volunteer Activity
Description
Homeroom Parent
Coordinate volunteers for the classroom; manage class dues and general liaison for parents and teachers for the class.  Time required varies, some done by telephone or e-mail & some at school, depending on event.  If more than two parents volunteer, names will be drawn to determine who the homeroom parents will be.
Winter Party Chairman
Coordinate with other grade level party chairmen to decide party activities and refreshments. Coordinate help of those volunteering to attend, assist, and supply refreshments for your child's class. Time required generally entails an advance planning meeting, phone calls or e-mails to class party volunteers & refreshment suppliers, and attendance at the party.  Homeroom Parents will notify you of your budget.
Attend & Assist Winter Party
Attend the Winter party and help chairman with party activities. Winter parties will be held Friday, December 18th, during the last hour of school.
Supply Refreshments - Winter Party
Purchase and deliver refreshments for the Winter party. Specific items to be supplied will be communicated by the Winter party chairman.
Valentine Party Chairman
Coordinate with other grade level party chairman to decide party activities and refreshments. Coordinate help of those volunteering to attend & assist, and supply refreshments for your child's class. Time required includes an advance planning meeting, phone calls or e-mails to class party volunteers & refreshment suppliers, and attendance at the party.  Homeroom Parents will notify you of your budget.
Attend & Assist Valentine Party
Attend the Valentine party and help chairman with party activities. Valentine parties will be held Friday, February 12th, during the last hour of school.
Supply Refreshments - Valentine Party
Purchase and deliver refreshments for the Valentine party. Specific items to be supplied will be communicated by the Valentine party chairman.
Carnival Room Parent
Coordinate class carnival booth including sign up of volunteers, set up and clean up. Booth and general assistance is provided by the Carnival Chairmen.  Requires minimal preparation time in the spring (self scheduled), coordination with volunteers, some time required day of and during the carnival. The Carnival will be held on Friday, May 15th.
McGruff
Present McGruff Safety program to class.  Materials and instructions provided.  Two sessions per month during school hours.  Schedule coordinated with teacher and documented back to McGruff Chairman.
Science Fair Project
(K-3)
Develop and coordinates the class science fair project.  Assistance and guidance provided by the PTA Chairman.   Project work takes place in first quarter of 2009.  Requires some in-class time, scheduled with the teacher.  Science Fair is Friday, February 25, 2009.
Supply Refreshments –
Teacher Appreciation Luncheon
Purchase and deliver refreshments for the grade level teacher appreciation luncheon. This is a one time event. The chairmen will communicate the date and specific items to be supplied.
Library
Assist librarian with various activities such as book check in/out, and shelving during your child’s scheduled library time. Volunteers rotate, but there is some flexibility in sharing or trading off time slots. Frequency is dependent on how many volunteers there are in each class.
Paw Print Express
Each class is responsible for one delivery day of the school mail.  This volunteer will help the class pick up, sort and deliver the mail.  The Paw Print Express chairmen will contact you regarding your specific date.
Bulletin Board
Each class has the opportunity to display their students on the bulletin board in front of the office.  This volunteer is responsible for taking pictures of children and displaying them in a theme of their choice.  Homeroom parent will notify you which month your class is to be displayed.
Math Star Grader
(K-5)
Weekly completed worksheets will be provided to you by the teacher for you to grade and return.  Master answer sheets and program overview will be provided by the PTA Chairman.
Odyssey of the Mind
Coach or assistant coach a Wilchester Team. 
Classroom Photographer
Assist the yearbook chairs and gradel level photographer by taking pictures at class holiday parties,field trips and any special events during the school year.
Coordinate 5th grade Party
Work with other volunteers to put together the end of year party for the 5th graders.  This is traditionally held at the Wilchester Pool on the last day of school.
5th Grade Video
   
Work on a team to collect pictures and create a fun and memorable DVD consisting of pictures of each 5th grade student.
